This presentation will explore the full lifecycle of dietary supplement development, emphasizing the importance of evidence-based approaches for healthcare practitioners. Beginning with an overview of how product concepts are inspired—whether by consumer needs, traditional use, or emerging scientific literature—we will trace the journey from idea to finished product. Key stages include ingredient selection, sourcing and quality control, preclinical safety assessment, and both in vitro and in vivo research when appropriate. Attendees will gain insight into formulation testing, including assessments of stability, purity, taste, and tolerance. The presentation will then focus on the design and execution of clinical research, addressing study design, sample size determination, outcome measures, and the ethical and regulatory framework (e.g., IRB approval). Methods for analyzing study data, evaluating endpoints, and using findings to inform product claims, labeling, and internal decisions will be discussed, concluding with a discussion on how scientific evidence is translated into practical tools for clinical use followed by Q&A.

The VERDICT Trial randomly allocated 766 Veterans to undergo a course of a low dose (1-5 visits) or a higher dose (8-12 visits) of multimodal, evidence-based chiropractic care for 10 weeks (Phase 1). After Phase 1, participants within each treatment arm were randomly allocated again to receive either chiropractic chronic pain maintenance care (CCPM), consisting of scheduled monthly chiropractic care, or No CCPM for 10 months. Briefly, we found that Veterans with cLBP responded better to higher dose chiropractic care over an initial 10-week period for physical functioning, pain intensity and pain severity. The effect size of the primary outcome was moderate and other differences were small, similar for those under maintenance care. We will present the results from these two trials, including qualitative interviews and healthcare utilization. Finally, we will discuss the clinical and health policy implications of these findings.

This session offers a guided demonstration of the No Pain MN website, showcasing its navigation features, evidence-based resources, provider search tools, and interactive maps that help users locate over 17,000 non-narcotic pain management providers across Minnesota.
In addition, we present findings from a grounded qualitative analysis of 48 in-depth stakeholder interviews, revealing eight dominant barriers and eight key facilitators to accessing non-pharmacological pain care. These insights are organized into four thematic spectrums:
Financial (e.g., cost, insurance coverage), Logistical (e.g., access, transportation), Relational (e.g., trust), Experiential (e.g., knowledge, perceived effectiveness)
Importantly, the perspectives of patients, providers, and administrators highlight how barriers and facilitators differ across roles and regions—offering a nuanced understanding of pain care access in Minnesota.
